| The Winery Andrew Pirie was Australia’s first PhD in Viticulture, founder of Pipers Brook Vineyard and the man who launched Tasmania onto the world wine scene with a bang when his inaugural 1994 Ninth Island Chardonnay took out the white wine trophy at the International Wine Challenge in London. His name still appears on the label of the wine which Matthew Jukes and others dubbed the greatest sparkling wine ever made outside of Champagne; Vintage Pirie. The Wine The Pirie label has now expanded to include “Pirie Estate,” highly complex and sensual wines from Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Riesling, and Pirie South, an unwooded label which uses the finesse of northern Tasmanian fruit to produce fresh, aromatic wines to compliment modern food styles. With the first vintage of Estate Pinot Noir already awarded 95/100 by both James Halliday and Huon Hooke, they illustrate Andrew’s intention to take Tasmanian wine to the next level. Tasting Notes - Pirie Estate 2004 Pinot Noir Deep ruby in colour, cocoa and coffee bean barrel aromas give way to the perfumes of spicy black cherry and plum. In the mouth, the soft richness of the Pinot Noir fruit is balanced by the taut, fine-grained and dry tannins on the finish, with some early signs of the gamey, earthy complexity which will develop with further bottle age. |
